I'm thinking of doing a video card upgrade and want to be able to
measure/quantify the improvement.

What benchmarking programs do people use to gauge the effectiveness of
hardware upgrades? Any free ones?

Thanks.

Benchmark what you do a lot that is machine intensive.

If the software won't time it for you then get a stopwatch
and find some common intensive task that you do a lot and
that you can find a way to get good precise times on.

Time it before and after you do the upgrade.

Assuming that your interests are game related,

The 3DMark series are synthetic benchmarks, but they may be interesting for
relative comparisons. The free versions have some limitations, but they
still perform a reasonable suite of tests.

There's also a sort of one-stop shopping:

Some of the files there are old. It might be nice if the dates were on the
page I provided the link for, but you'll have to click on each one to check
the dates.
