I installed XP SP2 the other day and rebooted it last night and found
out I was not able to use IE or Outlook Express. So I figured it was
a problem with SP2 and I did an Add/Remove of SP2 from my computer.
Now I'm unable to boot. I've done the System Recovery and when I come
to the point of typing in:

BATCH SPUNINST.TXT

it says:

The system cannot find the file or directory specified.

I've been googling for the solution to this and what has work for
others isn't working for me.

Any suggestions?

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer (875350)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;875350

The file SPUNINST.TXT is in the directory: C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst

Just make sure that you are in that directory when you run the BATCH command.

Have you tried Safe Mode:

A description of the Safe Mode Boot options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;[LN];315222

When you start the computer in Safe mode, Windows loads only the drivers and computer services that you need. You can use Safe mode
when you have to identify and resolve problems that are caused by faulty drivers, programs, or services that start automatically.

If the computer starts successfully in Safe mode but it does not start in normal mode, the computer may have a conflict with the hardware
settings or the resources. There may be incompatibilities with programs, services, or drivers, or there may be registry damage. In Safe
mode, you can disable or remove a program, service, or device driver that may prevent the computer from starting.

To troubleshoot startup problems in Safe mode, follow these steps:
Click Start , and then click Shut Down .
Click Restart , and then click OK .
When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
In Windows Advanced Option Menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode , and then press ENTER.

Hi,

I've tried what you suggested with the XP disc and the F8 to go to
safe mode. It still does not let me in on safe mode and when I looked
in the "C:\WINDOWS\$NTSERVICEPACKUNINSTALL$\SPUNINST\>" directory
there is only one file from 08/03/04 with a "c" attribute called
"_000224_.tmp.dll" and no other files in there.

So it seems I'm "missing" this spuninst file. Any other suggestions??
