My news server does not have a Vista newsgroup yet...go figure. But
since this affects both

I just bought a new computer with Vista Home Premium installed. I
have a Home network. I tried to connect to the new computer from the
old computer (XP SP2). It asked me for my username and password.
originally, my Vista computer user did not have a password. Wouldn't
accept nothing for a password, so I added one. Still doesn't work. No
error, just keeps popping the username/password dialog box up.

Help, I need to transfer files to the new computer and what should
have been easy is harder than I expected.

Thanks!

Use a newsreader and then access the MS newsgroups from the MS server,
news.microsoft.com. Here is a list of Vista newsgroups.

microsoft.public.windows.vista.administration_accounts_password
microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management
microsoft.public.windows.vista.games
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_devices
microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup
microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail
microsoft.public.windows.vista.music_pictures_video
microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing
microsoft.public.windows.vista.performance_maintenance
microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan
microsoft.public.windows.vista.security

You an also access them through the web interface. Scan down the left side
for microsoft.public.vista.

Have you tried it in the other direction. Just put the files you need in
the shared folder on the old XP machine and connect to it from the new one.
It's usually a whole lot easier to copy from the old machine than trying to
write to the new one.

As a matter of fact I just discovered the Vista machine (VM) can see
the XP machine (XPM) and access shared files. And even though the XPM
can see the VM, I can't access it.

Before the VM had the firewall turned off. when I tried to access it
from the XPM, I got a username/password dialog box that rejected all
attempts. When I realized the VM Firewall was turned off, I turned it
on, an now I get an error message that says "\\(computername) is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. COntact the Administrator of this server to find out if you
have access permissions

The Obsessive Compulsive in me wants to make it work both ways and I
can't.

Sorry, same guy...just used wrong profile.

The bigger issue is this computer will soon become the main computer
as soon as I get the files transferred. Gotta make this work
