I need help with basic troubleshooting tools. I have a backgound in network and desktop support, but it moslty deals with "plug in cable, hope flashy lights come on" type stuff. I know some basics, such as how and when to ping, tracert and ipconfig commands but I would very much like to lean more and better things to use.

I can figure out how to use commands and tools, I just need to know which ones to use.

Think I could also add that many of the problems people encounter are through
doing things in an unnecessarily difficult way; For example, "My Network
Places" is one of the most troublesome and unreliable applets in Windows yet
people insist on persevering with it, when a commandline-tool would literally
have had the job done in seconds.
