Basic Disk volume size reset

I "inherited" a notebook computer that has a 20 GB drive with XP installed and there is only the C drive, Fat32, formatted for the whole disk as one partition. It is currently using about 4.5 GB and the rest of the space is unused. I want to re-size the C drive to about 8 GB and create two new logical partition volumes (a D drive of approx 4 GB for apps and an E drive of the remaining space that will become the data drive

Is there a way to do this? I have an old version of Partition Magic that I have used successfully in the past on Win2K. But I don't know if it'll work properly on XP. If it did, then I think that would help me solve the problem. Does DISKPART offer any solution? I couldn't find any.

Latest version of PM would do the trick I am pretty sure. You could try the
disk management in the administrative tools but I think thats a crap shoot.

My advice is don't bother partitioning. One day you'll want all that space back as one large partition, so you
can accomodate Longhorn's new Page file system, which needs over 8GB of contiguous disk space (with room to
grow to 16GB). Seriously though, I think partitions are a good way to mash your hard disk twice as fast as
normal. The complications of drive letter mappings also mean that transfering your system to a new machine is
fraught with difficulties. You may as well create subdirectories off of C: for your data, programs (usually
Program Files anyway) etcetera. My advice again is "DON'T".
