I'm volunteering in a Library. We don't have a network
set up. We have individual computers with individual
access to the internet. Basic user accounts are not
providing enough security for our computers (ex: Limited
Account). Is there some way to restrict access to
individual programs in the limited account, or restrict
access to program options (ex: File, in Internet
Explore), locally? I'm sure it's rather easy, but I
don't have a clue where to start, and I've been searching
for support on the topic for majority of the day. Any
suggestions would be Great!

Uninformed,
Wainwright

You don't say if you're using XP Pro or XP Home. For XP Pro, you can use
the built in Group Policy Editor (GPEDIT.MSC) to apply restrictons, but they
apply to all users on the machine, including Administrators. You can work
around this by following the steps in the following KB Article.

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=293655
HOW TO: Apply Local Policies to all Users Except Administrators on Windows
2000 in a Workgroup Setting

This applies to stand alone, non-networked machines as well.

If you're running XP Home, the Group Policy Editor doesn't exist. You may be
interested in a small utility that I've written to allow XP Home (and Pro)
users to implement a large number of the Group Policy Editor restrictions,
on a per-user basis. See www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Windows XP
Security Console.

Thanks Doug!

Acutally, We have both XP Pro and Home, mostly home on
the few machines here in the Library. Your advice was
priceless, and has saved this library a lot of money, and
headache! Thank you so much!

Thanks again!

P.S. Any other advice would be excellent
