I just did a clean O/S install on my system because after the last batch of
automatic updates my computer ran awful. This time I'm not going to turn on
the auto updates and was wondering if anyone could tell me or lead me to a
site which will show me which updates are okay to install.

Thanks

Well, the ones that aren't safe to install are the ones that update your
card drivers when they are working perfectly fine.

consider making an image of your system partition prior to applying any
update

that way, you can go back if things go bad

Never get hardware driver updates from the windows update site. Those
should be obtained from the device manufacturer's web site, the computer
OEM's site if it's a large OEM like Dell or HP, or the motherboard
manufacturer's site if it's an on board device.

After the installation and with a firewall and anti virus active go to the
Microsoft update site and let it scan the computer using the Custom option.
It will give a list of updates. Do a few at at time - and make sure the
computer runs after each batch, or if you want, download each one separately
and run them from your machine one at a time. There are 60+ updates after
SP2.

You do not say how many updates - are you SP1 or SP2???
If you are able to get into WU without any probs, which some are finding, an
alternative would be to print out the list of the updates on offer, then go
into their respective site in MS, via a search and download from there to
disk if you can burn CD/DVD's.
If not download one at a time - reboot as required and see if the system
still works, as some KB's have been causing problems over the last few
months.
Make sure your system is clean from virus/spyware/malware etc.
Disconnect from the net - disable all your security stuff and install from
disk reboot as and when etc etc.
Its a long involved method, but has worked for me and others - but alas not
everybody.
If you have any further problems then post a thread in the windowsupdates
group.

Automatic updates turned off period.
First install all the latest hardware drivers. (chipset, video, audio,
lan, etc)
I then install _all_ the critical then the software updates without a
problem.
The problem you are having is usually attributed to faulty hardware,
faulty
drivers and/or improper installation of drivers.

WU Home page will tell you the updates you need - is SP2 installed?
You should be offered 50-60 security/critical updates.
The method of download and install at the moment is a subject of much
discussion in the windowsupdates group.
Not one way at the moment seems to work for all.
It is not recommended to get them elsewhere.
Your computer needs to be interrogated to see which updates are required on
your system.
I would suggest going to the updates group but have no wish to cause you
further depression.
