I turned on a Gateway Computer and the following message
appeared. "C0000221 Bad Image Checksum - Image ntvdm.exe
possibly corrupt. Header checksum does not match
computed checksum". I am running XP and not Windows NT.
What can I do to get the computer up and running. Do not
want to format computer. Thanks

Here's a link to an MS Knowledge Base article that indicates either a
file is damaged (usually during an upgrade to XP) or a RAM module is
bad. Since your installation worked before, presumably, I'd guess at
the latter.

To test RAM, download the precompiled Windows binary of Memtest86 from
www.memtest86.com. You'll make a bootable floppy, so set the machine to
boot from the floppy drive if it isn't already that way and boot with
Memtest. Allow the test to run for a long time like overnight or for
some hours, unless you get errors right away of course. If the RAM
tests bad, replace it. Make sure that the new RAM is the correct flavor
for your motherboard.
