bad changes to display settings

I downloaded several service packs and a new browser today and my have things changed. I cannot change my color setting from 4 bit, my icons look strange, the computer is slower than heck and I have worked hours to try and get it back.....I am unable to make changes in these display settings, what do I do from here?

For video problems, reload the video drivers from your back up or original
CD source. Or download recent drivers from the video chip or card
manufacturer's WEBsite.

sorry to be off subject dev, but my daughter has the same problem you
had with xp lsass.exe system error " when trying to update a
psssword......."
can this be fixed without losing any of her files.ddid you manage it/
she can't even load xp just keeps getting this message then rebooting
hope you can help
