Just got new computer with XP. Is there a backup utility in Windows where I
can specify specific folders to periodically backup to a CD?

How do I do it, ie, where are the instructions?

If you have XP Home, then the backup utility is not installed by default but
resides on the XP CD . If however you have a recovery CD and not a retail or
OEM CD, then you can't install it from there.
Have a look here:

However, the XP backup utility will not backup directly to CD anyway.
You will need to take other steps to do that.

Why would MickeyMouse not install the backup utility on XP Home by default?
Don't they give a shit about their home users? Guess not.

Which many folks have. Shows again how much MickeyMouse cares about its
users.

Of course. Most of the bundled crap that comes with Windoze is half-baked
forcing users to go and purchase full-functionality elsewhere. It's a plot
between the MickeyMouse monopoly and their tag-along accomplices.

Yes, although it won't back up to a CD directly. You have to back up to a
hard drive file, then burn the file to a CD.

Backup is installed automatically on XP Professional, but not on XP Home. If
you have the complete XP Home CD, find backup on the CD, in
\ValueAdd\MSFT\NTBACKUP and install it yourself by doubleclicking the file
ntbackup.msi.

If you don't have an XP CD, you can download ntbackup.msi at

As backup applications go, the one that comes with Windows is probably the
poorest one available. It's certainly better than nothing, but I receommend
you look at some the third-party alternatives available, such as my personal
favorite, Acronis True Image.
