Is there any kind of a backup that will let me replace the hard drive
without reinstalling all of the registered SW such as WINDOWS XP?

Imaging.
Some hard drive manufacturers supply such means with their retail packaged
drives.

The hard drive can be imaged using Acronis TrueImage or
Symantec Ghost, to mention a couple of applications.

Yes. Usually referred to as imaging, cloning, or ghosting software. Check if
the manufacturer of the new hard drive includes software to make a copy or
the old drive to the new drive which saves you from having to buy another
software which you will probably use once a year.

Thanks for all the feedback. I forgot to include that the drive(s) needing
backup is RAID. Does this preclude a normal backup?

RAID what 0,1 ? if it is 0 then no because XP sees only one drive if it
is 1 then your files are all backed up on the second drive.
