Hi Everybody.
Does someone know how to backup the the Windows XP sounds?
I know where the sound files are located, but I changed all the Windows
sounds and know I want to backup these individual setiings.
All the the new sound files are located where the original sounds are.
They are in: C:\WINDOWS\Media
Thanks in advance.
Tommy

Use the 'Save As...' button on the 'Sounds' tab of the 'Sound & Audio Devices' control panel
applet. This info is stored in the registry under:

"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents"

Hi Keith.
Thanks for your reply.
I found the sounds settings in the registry, but there is an entry for each
sound, but there must be a possibility of backing up the whole sound settings
in one, I guess.
Or must there be every and each sound be backed up individualy?
Hope you can give me a hint here.
Thanks again.
So long.
Tommy

In addition.
I named the sound settings to Tommy, but when I open the registry editor and
try to open a key for Tommy (also my administrator user account is called
Tommy as well) It says:
Could not open key...
But as I said before there is a key for each sound and I hope there is way
of backing up the whole settings named Tommy.
Thanks again for your help.

Sorry, for me to reply gain in bit and pieces, but I think I found it.
Is it correct to back up (Export and Save) the key?:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Shemes

When I click on Shemes it says to the right:

(Default Value) Tommy0?

So I think to export the key "Shemes" must be the correct backup.
At least I hope it is.
Thanks again.

I would save the entire AppEvents key, so that EventLabels are backed up as well.

Hi Keith.
I exported the AppEvents and saved it by right click on the folder AppEvents
and saved it under the same name.
Now I wanted to give it a try and I changed some sounds and then imported
the saved registry file by click on File and then on Import, but nothing
changed.
Also before I imported the file I clicked on AppEvents first.
I'm not very familiar with the registry.
Could you please tell me in a few words how to exactly save the key
AppEvents and then how do I restore it properly?
When I imported the saved file I just noticed that under:

AppEvents\Shemes\Apps\Default\Default

I have the subcategories:

..current
..Default
Tommy0?
Tommy0?

And before I had Tommy0? only once and now everywhere it appears twice.
I don't want to fool around with it any further until I know how it is done
properly.
Thanks again for your help.
I realy appreciated.

You saved it properly, just right-click -> export -> save under whatever name you want.

To restore, just right-click -> merge the saved file.

Look under:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Names"
to see if there are two 'tommy0' entries & what the associated display names are.

When you merge a saved reg file, it will add entries if they are in the file but not in the
registry, it will overwrite existing entries if they are already in the registry, but it will not
delete entries that are in the registry with no matching entry in the file. So you ended up with
your saved settings overlaid on current information.

So if you want a clean 'restore' of your settings, you should delete the current AppEvents key
before merging your backup. You can do this manually or you could add a line to the beginning of
your backup file that will delete the current settings:

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents]

Hi Keith.
Thanks a lot, but I think I figured it out.
To restore the backup I just double clicked it and confirmed to add this key
to the registry and that was it.
It worked.
I did as you said and backed up the whole AppEvents before Tommy0? was
showing twice everywhere.
Would it be ok to now to delete the AppEvents folder in the registry and
double click on my backup?
That should get rid of the double showing entries Tommy0? I hope.
If you can confirm this I think I'm done.
Thanks again very much.

Yes, if your backup only has one Tommy0 entry (you can examine the file in notepad), then deleting
the AppEvents key and merging your backup should work fine.
