Backup restore partial or complete?

I would like to do a complete reinstall of XP & all of my programs that are
on my 'c' drive. If I were to use the Windows Backup facility to first
create a backup onto a partition which is either located on the same
physical drive or another drive completely can this backup then be used to
reset my options ect.. back to the way they were before I reinstalled?

If the answer is yes can the restore be done progressively? By that I mean
if I have only reinstalled a few programs can I just restore the settings
for the program that have been reloaded on the PC & then when I have
reinstalled more programs do another restore to update these more recently
installed programs? Once again if the answer is yes do these later restores
have to be done as a selective restore or can one take the easier route of
just doing a complete restore for a second time?

MS Backup is suitable only for backing up data files.. you will require a
disk imaging program.. try this one..
