Can anyone tell me how to backup my Outlook 2003 Contact Files on a computer with BCM so I can then use them on a computer with Outlook 2003 that I don't have BCM on. On the computer without BCM when I am writting an emal and click on TO: for it to load my contacts for my email message I get the following error:
The address list could not be displayed. The Contacts folder associated with this address list could not be opened; it may have been moved or deleted... etc
I really want to be able to be able to move files between the 2 laptops but don't want to loose anything doing it?
Thanks for any help you can give me, I posted this on the BCM list a few days ago but didn't get any answers.

There is no "Contacts file". All Outlook items are kept either in a
Personal Folders (PST) file or in your Exchange or BCM mailbox.

To move your contacts from one machine to another, create a PST with
New>Outlook Data File. Create in that PST a Contacts folder with
New>Folder, selecting "Contact Items" in the "Folder Contains" drop-down.
Nov copy all of your contacts from your main Contacts folder to this new
one. Right-click on the PST root and choose Close. Close Outlook. Copy
the PST by whatever means you wish to the hard drive of the other PC, making
sure it is not read-only when you do. Finally, use File>Open>Outlook Data
File in Outlook on the other PC and, if you wish, you can copy the contents
of the Contacts folder you've transported to the default Contacts folder on
that PC.

Thanks Brian, I found I did have the .pst files backed up and on the
new computer.
Great.

Now when I click on the "TO" when I want to add an
address to an email I still get the error "The address list could not
be displayed. The contacts folder associated with this address list
could not be opened; it may have been moved or delete, or you don not
have permission etc..."

Do you have the Outlook Address Book service installed? Have you enabled
your Contacts folder as an Address Book?
I then click the OK to accept the error and my "Select Names"
dialogue box comes up. "Contacts" is under "Show Names from the:"
and then if I click the down arrow I can get my contact under the
name "Contacts1" which is what I named it because I can't figure out
how to get it to copy to the Contacts folder?

Click on the Contacts1 folder. Then click View>Arrange By>Current View>By
Category. Select all your contacts and right-click-and-drag to your
Contacts folder. Choose "Copy".

Hi... I did get my "Contacts1" to now show up as the default when I click on the "To" when writing my email so I don't get the error but I know that I don't have it set up correctly... so here is the next problem... My "Contact1" doesn't show up in the navigation pane under "My Contacts" in Outlook so I can’t copy the files as you stated. The 2 folders that do show up in the navigation pane are "Contacts" and "Contacts in Personal Folders" both show all of my contacts. If I add a new name to 1 of these, the new name does not show up in "Contacts1" it only shows up in "Contacts" and "Contacts in Personal Folders". So I definitely have something wrong.

I so appreciate your help, I just can’t afford to loose all of my business contacts and business email so I am afraid to start all over. Any suggestions this time or should I start all over?

If I were seeing what you describe, I'd create a new mail profile.

Not sure what you mean, set up a new mail profile? Do you mean set
up a new user with a new email account?

No, that's not what I mean. I meant what I said. You create a mail profile
using the Mail applet in Control Panel. For Windows prior to XP, it's
Control Panel>Mail. For XP, the default is Control Panel>Users>Mail. Start
the applet and pick "Show Profiles". Proceed from there.
