Hello,

I am going to move and the PC is going with. How do I back up to prepare
for the move? It is about 12 miles, but just wnaat to make sure. I am on
WIN XP home edition, about 2 years old. Please advise.

Have a great day!

Hi,

Copy files you don't want to lose to CD/DVD or other removable media, and
make sure you have the installation disks for the operating system and
software. In the advent of disaster, this is all you really need.

A better solution, if you want to spend a few bucks, is to use imaging
software to copy the system "as is" to DVD or other drive. If disaster
strikes, just restore the image.

You should always have a full and complete backup. Don't wait for some
circumstance to dictate this.

If you don't mind my asking, which particular imaging software would
you recommend? I'd be interested in any information on this subject,
and if there is another, more appropriate forum to discuss this, I'd
appreciate a pointer.

C'ya,

Ben

I'll step in, to point out one inexpensive solution...

Read up on what it can do, and download on-line if you wish.

Hi Ben,

Personally, I use several but chiefly the imaging that is part of BootIT NG.
I've also had great success with Acronis' program as well.

Hello, Rick.

Thank you for the info. But I need to ask you another "dumb"
question.

I posted the same inquiry in another forum and got the following terse
reply:
No need to buy anything. There's a backup utility built into the OS:

Can XP's own back-up utility do a backup of the HD such that I could
recover the HD contents from backup media (say, DVDs) in case of a HD
crash such that I could "recover" my system without having or using
the XP OS disk(s)? If so or if not, please elaborate. At this point
I am thoroughly confused.

C'ya,

Ben

P.S. My Sony has XP Media Center Edition installed. So I'm not sure
where that is in terms of XP Pro vs. Home in terms of the backup
utility installed.

Hi Ben,

You can use it, and create an ASR disk, but it's not nearly as reliable as
imaging.
