I'm trying to export for a backup copy (.pst) of my
Outlook files/folders to a CD (or zip drive). I'm usng
the import/export menu but there is no prompt to allow me
to savea to any other drive - only as backup files on my
computer. Can someone tell me how I can save my files
(archive, current mailbox, calendar, contacts) to a CD
using an external CD writer?

Thank you.

Don't bother with Import and export - just copy your pst file in Windows
Explorer. (You may need to enable Hidden and System Files and Folders - go
to Tools-Folder options-View, scroll down to Hidden Files and Folders and
possibly also uncheck "Hide protected Operating System Files" as well)

Thanks for your input. I followed your direction but
can't find (or at least can't access the Outlook files I
need)the Outlook files to copy. This is the reason
behind I what I thought might be an easy alternative
(NOT) which was to copy them to a CD.

I have to reload Outlook asap so any further direction
would be helpful.

What happens when you try to access THE file? (There should only be one,
unless you have archived) and in what location did you look? (What OS?)

This is the reason

Thanks again. Don't see "the file" in Explorer. I can
see Office and Office 10 in the Windows files and if I
click on those i see a series of files including "1033" -
"1036" etc.

Again - any direction will be helpful.

As Rifleman says, don't use export. Simply copy your PST to a CD (Windows
XP makes this easy - just drag and drop the file to the CD icon in My
Computer - or just use whatever CD writing software you have to make the CD)
take the CD to the other computer, copy the PST to your hard drive, remove
the Read Only attribute and use File>Open in Outlook to open it.

if you're using XP the default location for the pst file is C:\Documents and
Settings\"Your Username"\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Enable Hidden Files and Folders in Control Panel>Folder Options>View (or
Appearance and Themes>Folder Options>View)

Thanks Brian - the Hidden Files and Folders is enabled
per below but don't see the Outlook folder. Any other
direction?

Have you tried looking here?
if you're using XP the default location for the pst file is C:\Documents and
Settings\"Your Username"\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

I did find it = thanks. When I try to copy it to the CD
(tried several so it's not a corrupted CD) I get an error
message saying "Windows encountered a problem copying the
file, what would you like Windows to do?"

I've tried copying, dragging, "send to", and I get the
same message as above. I've double checked
that "archived" or "read only" have been unchecked and
still cannot seem to do this simple task.

Suggestions?

have you closed Outlook AND Outlook Express (if it's open) before you try
this?
