How do I back up ALL my email messages and other data from Outlook onto an
external device e.g. CD

No expert I, but...
Everything (email, contacts, etc.) is in a file with the
extension PST.
Find that file, and back it up...
It is possible (for a variety of reasons) that you have more
than on PST file. Be certain that you are backing up the
correct one. You can be certain by looking in Outlook, or by
searching your system for *.PST and checking the
modification dates.
To check from within Outlook the precise method depends on
the version.
For OL2002 look in File | Data File Management.
For OL2000 I believe you need to look in Tools | Services |
Personal Folders | Properties.
