Backup of data possible from DOS prompt?

I am in the process of conducting a recovery from a corrupted registry using
the 307545 article from Microsoft. I have followed the first step of the
process, but the process is hung up on the second. Just to be safe, I want
to grab and backup all of my files before I continue.

My question is this: since Windows XP is not yet fully functional, can I
instead access and copy files from my hard drive to an external disk drive
(via USB connection) from the DOS prompt? At this point, the DOS prompt via
the recovery feature is the only viable access point to my PC. Removing the
hard drive and making it a slave drive on a second PC is not an option for me
- both technically and no availablity of a second PC - so the DOS avenue
seems to be my only hope. Is this possible to use the DOS prompt to
accomplish this? And if yes, how?

Appreciate any assistance that can be offered.

I assume that you mean "Recovery Console" when you write
"DOS Prompt". You will discover that the Recovery Console
has little in common with a DOS Prompt. The number of
commands is very limited, their syntax is different and your
access to your data folders may be restricted unless you made
prior arrangements.

You write "the DOS prompt via the recovery feature is the
only viable access point to my PC". You probably overlooked
the Bart PE boot CD (http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/#download).
It takes some three hours to make one but it is a terrific tool
that will give you full access to your hard disk. I warmly
recommend it.

You might find that backing up your important files once a
week or so to an external 2.5" disk in a USB case is a far
less painful and highly cost-effective way to protect your
valuable data.

Microsoft has been unable to cope with Open Source except to complain about
it.
