I am running XP professional SP1. I have a user whose
backup has stopped working. Backup hangs up looking for a
backup device and the program never comes up. Backup
starts when I boot in safe mode, but won't backup the
files because removable storage service won't start in
safe mode. After a regular machine bootup, If I manually
start removable storage, backup hangs looking for the
backup device before it actually starts. If I disable
removable storage; backup comes up and lets me select the
files to backup, but the backup fails. Confused? I know I
am.

Is there a driver associated with the device you are backing up to? Perhaps
it is corrupted and a reinstall would restore functionality.

I have same problem. Please let me know if you find answer.

Backup devices recognized by ntbackup.exe are the A drive, a tape drive or another Hard Disk Drive. CDs and DVDs are not useable, i.e. you can not backup to them. See article "Windows Backup Does Not Back Up to CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R Devices http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315255".

You can also open Help & Support » type in "backup" » my system returns 45 articles about the subject.
