Hi,

In old NT days we had BDC.
What is BDC in win 2000 and active directory terminology?

Thanks,
Alan

It doesn't exist, its now all Domain Controllers and contains a read/write
replica of the directory/domain.

A.M.

That concept does not exist anymore. There is nothing to call it. It does
not exist. Try to get this concept out of your head. As Chriss stated, all
domain controllers are equal. All have a writable database. That is all
that you need to know! ;-)

Furthermore, there are Domain Controllers that are Global Catalog servers as
well as the five FSMO Roles that Chriss mentioned.

HTH,

Cary

Let's put it this way ...

"In Active Directory, all Domain Controllers are equal ... but some Domain
Controllers are more equal than others ..."

Blah, I fully believe in the concept of a PDC in Windows 2000 and 2003. Don't
believe, shut off the machine with the PDC/RID FSMO and leave it off... We'll
see who cries uncle. :o)

The whole thing is a marketing ploy to get away from the perceived weakness of
having a single master for changes. It was a way for other OS people to beat on MS.

When you put it that way!

Turn off the DC that holds the PDC/RID roles and you aint gonna be able to
do a lot. But I think the AM is talking about the 'concept' of one Domain
Controller having a writable db ( the PDC ) while all the others have only a
read only dc ( the BDCs ).

Cary

True all of them writable for most things. I'm just saying that the specialness
of the PDC should be maintained in your mental image of the environment.
