How do I disable the creation of the backup copy?
Created in 97, used thru 2000 & 2003.
Deleting file just causes a new one to be created next time I run spreadsheet.

Hi Tony,
Don't confuse backup with Excel's requirement to maintain
two copies of a file while working on it. If this involves
diskettes you should be aware that you should never access
removeable media directly from Excel or risk loss.

You might wish you didn't stop creating a backup copy (.XLK) for your file, but

Save As (F12 key), then on the Save As Dialog menus: Tools -->
General Options, *uncheck* "Always create backup copy". Answer "Yes"
when prompted to replace the old document. Your new document is
identical except that the new one *does not* save a backup each time you save the file.

Thanks for your reply, I've only just got my system running again (HD Failure.....deep joy!) If I had a checkable box under Tools/Options/general I would have used it ages ago but..................... ! Perhaps I did not explain accurately. The file was created in Excel 97 and am still using it in Excel 2003 there has never been, no matter which way, including yours, that I try to get a screen visible that gives me the longed for check box. I have enough backup directories /images etc etc to keep me in business till the " Crack of Doom" so i thought the lack of a xlk file to be a not insurmountable problem, as has just proved to be the case :-

Reread David's post. He didn't say it was under tools=>Options=>General
tab. He said it was under the tools button in the file saveas dialog.
