Backup Compression

When I schedule a backup using ntbackup for user files to a network
directory on a WinXPP machine, the backup does not compress the data. The
backup is the same size as the files being backed up. The backup on 9x
clients used to compress the data. Am I missing a setting? The files are
being backed up to a Win 2000 server. We do not have active directory.

Hi Aaron,

When we use NTBackup, there will be a selection of "If possible, compress
the backup data to save space" In Windows XP, this function only can be
available when you are saving the backup date on a tape. If this option is
disabled, it means you do not have a tape drive on your computer or your
tape drive cannot handle compressed data.

The behavior is by design.
