backup and format?

I'm a little clueless, and afraid, of formatting C: I've read many other
posts, but still hesitant. I need to backup files, and then format.
Can some one tell me how to back up files to external HD, format, then put
back what I need? step by step?
I know, sounds tooo simple, but I'm clueless....

Is there good software to help clean/speed my 3.2 GHz PC which may help to
avoid formatting?

Thank you in advance..........StimpsonDog

If you have an external hd and can see it on the computer, the
simplest way would be to drag and drop the files/folders you want to
save. Put them all in a new folder on the external HD so you can find
them again. You then just drag them back to where they came from.

You could use the backup wizard to save stuff. That will save it all
in one file and will remember where it came from and so where it needs
to go back to, unless you tell it different.

Look in help for 'backup'.

Why are you considering re-installing? Do you have viruses, spy-ware
or trajans on your machine? A 3.2GHz PC should fly and if it doesn't
there is something seriously wrong. However re-installing without
finding out the cause would likely mean that the problem will
re-occur.

Cheers,
