Backspace key won't delete selection

I'm using Office XP (Word 2002). The backpspace key will no longe
delete a selection. It will delete a single character but not
highlighted selection. If a selection is highlighted and I hi
backspace my cursor moves to the beginning of the selection withou
deleting.

Any ideas on how to change this back to delete
 
In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing replaces
selection" box | OK.
 
Is your CTRL key stuck? Try some CTRL key combinations for formatting to see
if it is working properly.

This is not the issue here. The problem is that Word considers backspacing
"typing," so if "Typing replaces selection" is not enabled, it doesn't work
on selected text.
