KB 302894 tells how to manually install the backup utility. I use my restore
CD but can't find ValueAdded Folder nor NTbackup. I want to backup my
system before I install the new win xp sp 2. How can I backup the whole
system without backing up each individual folder? Or what is the best way to
go.

Symantec Ghost 2003 will image the entire hard disk as-is.
You can do it to another hard disk as an image, to tape, to CD, or to DVD.

You can find that recovery cd's dont always have all of
the same tools/data that normal install discs for windows,
such as those straight out of the pacakge would otherwise
have. COntact your pc manufactuor, or use other tools,
like Ghost, which was mentioned above.

You will find many shortcomings with both Software and hardware in
_proprietary systems_.

Which is true, but doesn't answer the question. Cepal, you can either
image the drive with third-party software like Ghost or DriveImage or
you can just back up your data onto cd-r's or dvd-r's. If you want a
quick way to get back your system if things go wrong, imaging is what
you want to do.

It's not on recovery CDs. You can get a copy of Ntbackup from the link
posted below. Note it is not really a good program. There are many
other better ways. One such is a disk imaging program, which creates a
compressed image of the drive. Much easier for restoring. Some
programs to choose from are Symantec's Drive Image, Norton Ghost 2003,
BootIt NG, and Acronis True Image. In terms of a more traditional back
up program Stomp, Inc.'s Backup MY PC is very good though pricey.

Unfortunately this is NOT a good idea !

The *only* place to get Microsoft utilities is directly from Microsoft. There could be
viruses or parasitical malware in the download.

So downloading the software from your site is contraindicated even if you are a trustworthy
"guy."

What are you talking about? That's a reputable site for this download.
If you know of a location on the MS site for this file then post it.

I repeat -- The *only* place to get Microsoft utilities is directly from Microsoft.

NTBackup (which is a bare bones stock program that really should be reaplced by a 3rd party
software package anyway) is located on the WinXP CDROM !

If you don't have the disc, you can't get it from there. That's a
reputable download site.

It's not an endorsed site by Microsoft. The OP should have a WinXP CDROM as well as a
Restore disk. If not, he can easily borrow one.

What about MS java then. You can't get that from the MS site, but you
can elsewhere, then update it using windows update. That is a good site
for this download.

No, you get Sun Java from Sun. The ones who created Java in the first place !

Microsoft blew it -- They violated the license agreement with Sun and Sun subsequently sued
Microsoft, and rightfully won.

There is *NO* reason at this time to revert back to Microsoft's improperly recoded version.
