Backing Up Outlook

I will soon be redoing my PC and re-installing Windows XP. I was
wondering if anyone can tell me what is the best way to back up my
Outlook so that I can restore it to the new system. The last time I
did this, I saved all my back up info to a folder on my second hard
drive. But when I tried to restore it, the system would not let me do
so. So I lost all my email and address.

So any help anyone can provide will be great.

Thanks,
Jeff Walters

I use Outlook Express Backup by Genie-Soft. They also have one for Outlook.
Here's a link:
http://www.genie-soft.com/products.html

It has a 30 day trail period with full functionality, and will backup as a
self=executable. Works well, and will also save preferences, folders, etc,
including IE.

First you need to back up the folders. If you right click on the folder
you can see the first part of the path that they are stored in, however
it's a long path name and includes one of those cryptic numbered
directory names like {2915EC86-588C-4689-8BF5-F05F4858AB97}.

\Documents and Settings\YOUR NAME HERE\Local Settings\Application Data ...

.... \Identities\{CRYPTIC NUMBER}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Back up this entire directory.

Before runnning outlook express for the first time, disconnect your system
from the internet so it doesn't download any mail into the folders that
you'll be overwriting.

After I've re-installed Outlook, I recreate dummy folders for all the
ones I created myself, before restoring the actual folders that I backed
up. This may not be necessary. You can try just restoring the folders
you backed up and see if it works. If not, create dummy one and then
restore again.
