my computer has been acting upplately and id like to reformat my harddrive.
before i do this, of course, i want to back up all of my photos and documents
etc.
the problem is, i cannot boot windows from my harddisk (the computer is that
messed up :p). so ive put my harddisk in an external case, and using a 2nd
computer, am backing it up to a second harddrive. however, when i try and
copy the folder Isaac (my name... my user account), it tells me that access
is denied. i presume this is because my account is password protected.
the message: Not Authorized. the folder also shows up as empty.
the question: how do i copy this folder??? all of my important docs and
photos are in there... any suggestions are appreciated, thank you...

ive already tried sharing the folder.. still says \'not authorized'

You need to take ownership of the files:

Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP [Q308421] -

There is no SECURITY tab. There is a 'Sharing' tab, but it doesn't have any
of the options....

As stated at the beginning of that article, you have to disable
Simple File Sharing.

In XP Professional, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Folder
Options.
On the View page, remove the check mark from the box next to "Use
Simple File Sharing (Recommended)". Click OK.
You should now see the Security tab.

In XP Home, start your computer in Safe Mode by hitting the F8
key right after the POST.
Logon with an account that has administrative privileges in order
to take ownership of the folder.
Use Windows Explorer to navigate to the folder you're trying to
recover and right click on it. You should now have access to the
Security tab.

If you have XP Home Edition, you must go into Safe Mode to see the
Security tab. Other requirements:

a. The drive must be NTFS
b. In Folder Options - View, uncheck 'Use Simple File Sharing'. That is
the level used in Home, and for some strange reason is on by default in
Pro, too.
