I am a novice user with a Compaq 8401 Computer w/Windows
XP Home Edition. I bought and installed a Western Digital
80GB External Hard Drive to back-up my internal 100GB
hard drive.
The problem is that I do not know how to use Windows to
back-up all files and programs (except those which can be
recovered by running System Restore) to my new external
drive.
Is there a step by step tutorial a NOVICE can sucessfully
use to accomplish the task? If so, how do I access it?

If not, can anyone out there assist me? I have never
tried to access help here, so I do not know if my request
is appropriate.

Thank You, Ralph

You need either an image or a backup application that supports your external
hard drive. Windows XP Profession and retail Home {not all OEM} has a backup
application. However, I am not sure that backup to an external drive is
supported. If not, you need to backup to an internal drive and copy the
backup file to the external drive.

I suggest you consider a image program such and PowerQuest Drive Image or
Norton Ghost or other. Check first with the publisher to ensure that your
drive is supported.

Ralph,

I'm assuming you got the 80 gb disk working, and that it's got a drive
letter that you can determine, e.g. f: or something.

On f:, create a folder called \backup.

With the XP backup utility, just direct the output of the abckup to
f:\backup (or whatever the drive letter and folder name is.).

Read the Backup program's Help file, and general Windows Help on backup.
