I have a template I downloaded form Microsoft;s template
website.

I need to edit the image that is on the background of the
template but I can't select it. Is there a way of getting
the image to manipulate it?

Hi DebraAnn

its's probably on the slide master

choose view / master / slide master ... edit away and then click on Close
(or Close Master View) depending on your version to get back to the normal
slides.

Cheers

You might try editing the Master. Using the pull-down
menu, click on View | Master | Slide Master. You should
then be able to grab the image to edit.

Have you tried going to View > Master > Slide Master and selecting the
image? That's the place to start.

I tried all this. That was how I use to do it. It
doesn't let you touch it. It is a "Fill Effect" image
under background. I see the name of the image, but I
can't get it.

Everyone is telling me to Click the "View" menu,
select "Master", "Slide Master". That is what I have
always done. The image is not in the slide master. It is
in the "Format", "Background", "Fill Effects", "Picture"
area. I see the name of the image used but don't know how
to grab the image file to manipulate it.

Problem solved. I saved the file as html and it created a
jpeg file of the image in the background. Thanks anyways.

You can't manipulate it in PowerPoint. This means the entire image is a
graphic file (probably a JPG or PNG). Do you have this file somewhere? If
so, open it up in Microsoft Photo Editor or Adobe Photoshop, for example,
and make your changes to the graphic there. If you don't have the image
saved, you can do a screen capture within PowerPoint (ALT-PRINTSCREEN),
paste it into your graphics program and then makes changes.

Sorry for the cornfusion!

Well, everyone told you that because you didn't mention that the background
was inserted using Format/Background/Fill Effects/Picture. "Can't select"
can cover a lot of ground, so we tend to start with the most frequently
occurring and straightforward way to resolve an issue.

Now that you've added that information, it makes it easier to offer more
appropriate advice to your situation.

Basically, you can't get to a "fill effect" background by selecting, as you
know. Your best bet will be to create a blank slide and use File/Save As.
Select PNG from the "as type" drop-down box. Say "no" when prompted wrt if
you want to save all the slides or just the one. This saves a blank slide as
a PNG image, which you can manipulate in a photo editing application. Then
you need to reinsert that image onto the slide master using either
Insert/Picture/From File or the Format/Background/Fill Effect/Picture thing.

Glad you got it resolved, and thanks for letting us know your solution.

I usually have better luck saving as PNG (as I described in my previous
post), but it depends on the image. I'm happy to hear that the JPG worked
well for your background.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

PowerPoint doesn't provide the functionality that you are looking for
(export picture fill effects at native resolution for editing with external
image editing program). The workaround is to use the "File -> Save as web
page..." command (save as type "Web page (*.htm, *.html)") to save the
presentation. By default this creates a sub-folder in the folder you
specify when saving the presentation and this sub-folder should contain the
picture fill images at their original quality/resolution.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that PowerPoint should
provide better content management tools for finding, exporting, changing,
replacing, optimizing, deleting, etc. linked, embedded and native content
(without havuing to resort to workarounds, VBA or 3rd party add-ins), don't
forget to send your feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please)to Microsoft at:

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product

that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.
