Background Defrag crashes (cross-post)

Cross-post to XP general discussion...

I receive a message from time to time that says "Disk Defragmenter Module has
encountered a problem and needs to close...." I didn't start it so it must be
a an automated background process. It only seems to happen if I leave one of
my VC.NET solutions open.
How do I prevent this defrag from running? I prefer to run the tools when I
want to, not when they want to ;-)

There are at least two possibilities: (1) if it is the native XP defragger,
that can be run on a schedule; check the XP scheduler, (2) if it is a
third-party defragger (e.g., Norton, Diskeeper, O&O), they can have their
own schedulers; check settings or preferrences for those programs.

I have not installed any 3rd party stuff so I would guess it's the native
defrag. I checked the "scheduled tasks" in the control panel and the only
things there are the daily Symantec live update and weekly full scan. There
are other posts in Gen Discussion that refer to the 'prefetch mode' that I'm
going to check out today. Changing the way prefetch works doesn't really
sound like what I want to do though.
