I just purchased a lap top from Dell. After I set it up I started the
microsoft office 2003 word. I was fiddling with background color, it worked
for awhile and now it does not. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling. I
have also tried Detect and repair, and the trouble shooting area. I realize
that you can not view color in normal mode-only web or print format, which I
can not view there either. I am at a loss in what to do. Can anyone please
help me?

From Word's Help

Troubleshoot backgrounds and watermarks
My document background doesn't print.

Document backgrounds are designed to be viewed on the screen and not printed.
The background that you create by using the Background command on the Format
menu will not print. To add a printable background, borders, or shading to your
page, use the Printed Watermark command (by pointing to Background on the
Format menu) or the Borders and Shading command on the Format menu.

My document background is not displayed.

Microsoft Word displays document backgrounds in Web layout view only. To switch
to Web layout view, click Web Layout on the View menu. If you want Word to
display your document in Web layout view the next time the document is opened,
save your document in this view before you close it.
