background activity

the hourglass alongside my cursor seems to appear about every two minutes briefly as though there is some activity going on in the background. I am on broadband internet and have turned this off and it still happens....any idea what it is, it has only just started happening
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
 
Hi,

Could be something sinister, but it could simply be the indexing service.
This would be normal, especially on a new installation, or after some recent
system changes.
