If you are using XP's native backup program, ntbackup, know that it
cannot natively backup to CD unless 3rd party CD writing software is
installed, and even then can only backup to a single CD. It cannot span
CDs. It also cannot backup to DVD no matter what. It is geared toward
tape drives or other hard drives. It will work ok in backing up to an
external hard drive (or network drive) and restoring individual files /
folders is ok, but if you need to restore the complete drive it's
cumbersome. XP must be installed first. If you have XP Pro, Ntbackup
has an ASR feature (Automated System Recovery) which makes this restore
of a boot/system drive easier but still it takes much longer than an
imaging program, and I never got it to restore my system to full
functionality as it was when the backup was made. It also mandates that
a floppy drive be available. One floppy disk is created in the ASR
process and there is no way around that. ASR is not available on XP
Home addition.

One backup option is to use a drive imaging program. This makes an
exact image of the partition which can be saved on CD/DVD or to another
drive - internal or external. Imaging to an external USB 2.0 / Firewire
drive works well. Then occasionally burning an image to DVD gives you
redundancy. Restores can be done of the entire partition or individual
files / folders. These work well and make it easy to recover from a
drive crash. Examples of this are:

Norton Ghost 10
Acronis True Image
Terabyte Unlimited's Image for Windows
CasperXP

The second option is a traditional backup program such as Stompsoft's
Backup My PC. This is an excellent tool. It is the evolution of
ntbackup. There are other good backup programs out there as well. This
can do a complete backup or backup individual files and folders to
DVD/CD and other drives.

StompSoft has "PC Backup" while Sonic/Roxio
has "Backup MyPC" -- which one were you pointing
at Rock ??

IIRC before both StompSoft and Sonic's offering had the same names.
Looks like StompSoft changed the name. I will change my response on
this. Thanks.

I presume you meant the Stompsoft product, however, it sounds like
they have changed more than the name from looking at their web page.
"Important information for Backup MyPC users" pops up a
window with the statement that

Important message about upgrading to PC BackUp.

PC BackUp cannot be used to restore backup sets created
with Backup MyPC or other backup applications.

To ensure the maximum level of protection for your data, we
recommend that you back up all your data using PC BackUp.

I am having the same problem. Why doesn't Microsoft fix this damn problem.
I've search their whole database and there isn't anything. It's a pain in
the ass.

What problem? You posted as a reply to another thread but didn't quote any
of the substance so we don't know what you are talking about. This is a
newsgroup, not a forum. Many people, including me, use a newsreader and
only see the most recent posts in threads.

You might want to try using a newsreader instead of the web interface, which
is lousy at best. Here is a link on how to use Outlook Express for
newsgroups.
