I could give you some fish. But when you are done eating it you
would only get hungry again.

Instead, let me help you learn to fish:

Google is your friend.

It depends on what you want to back it up to.

I assume you mean 'imaging' software if you want to ,backup your system. in
which case Acronis True Image is as good as it comes.

Good article. I've been considering a more complete backup solution (oh
dear, I sound like a marketing website) for a while now, as I'm only backing
up a few absolutely critical files at the moment, and wasn't sure which
direction to go. While I'm still not entirely sure which way I want to go,
the article did point out a few benefits and drawbacks to the different
methods that I hadn't considered. Ultimately, I'm thinking probably a large
USB drive, but I'll give it some more thought before I do anything. (And
even given a choice in medium, I then have to consider a choice of backup
strategy...sometimes there's drawbacks to knowing a lot about computers!)

Excellent article. Large external USB hard drives are often available quite
cheaply at stores like Staples, Best Buy, Circuit City, and Office Max in
the USA. The package often includes a free stripped down version of backup
software. If you haven't backed up your system, making a full backup to a
USB drive is a good idea. Don't just leave it at that, though. Read up on
how to keep your stuff separate from the operating system and installed
software, so you can do smaller backups to avoid filling your USB drive so
fast.

Maybe that's why he chose the name he did? :)

I'll opine that you really need at least *two* backup utilities:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) An imaging utility to back up your system. You only do this once
or whenever you make a major change. The idea being to have only
backups of known good systems (i.e. if you pick up some virus or other
malware that would be the copy you'd restore).

2) A data backup utility for doing incremental backups. You do this as often
as seems reasonable and all you care about are "Data" type files.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I use TeraByte's "Image" for #1.

For #2, I use Dantz's Retrospect (in spite of it's pitiful, miserable UI)
because it allows selective restores of various versions of a given file.

Also for #2, I have something called "Second Copy" running all the time.
Instead of putting backed-up files into a special DB, "Second Copy" just
copies them to another drive. This is my CYA alternative against the day
when my box goes down after I've been working all day and haven't done
the Retrospect backup since the previous day or earlier.

For all backups, I back up to IDE drives in USB2 wrappers - so they're
plug-and-play compatible with any other Windows system that speaks NTFS.

I also rotate a couple of those drives between home, my briefcase, and a desk at
one of my work locations..

I am using SyncToy (from Microsoft download center). It has a Vista edition
now.

The first run, it will help you backup all files. After that, it only
backup those modified files since your last backup. Save you a lot of time.

I don't have a lot of personal data in my user directory, I use SyncToy to
back up user directory to DVD-RW frequently.
