I have backed up my C drive onto a stand alone hard drive connected by USB my
PC recognizes this as Drive G: - all went well and 40GB sits there but I
cant find a program to open the backed up folder in order to check all files
are there or to use as a restore; what do I use?

If you are using ntbackup.exe, open the backup program and choose either the
Restore Wizard or click on Restore and Manage Media.

What did you use to backup? Run the backup program and use it's restore
function.
