Back Up System State

I removed Norton Antivirus from my computer. It suggests doing a back up to my System State prior to deleting the Symantec registry keys. I tried to backup to both CD burner and A drives and both times it failed. I followed all the steps in article 308422. Also, do I really need to delete the registry keys? I want to use a different Antivirus program and want to install ASAP but not sure if I should install prior to the step listed above. Thanks for the help.

Deleting the registry keys isn't critical, but I would. Have you read this
