Is there a way to back up installed updates instead of having to redownload
them every time I reinstall WinXP

I do not think you ought to make a habit of reinstalling as a matter of
routine maintenance. I have not reinstalled this system since XP came
out

When you download an update the download .exe or possibly .msi first
goes in Temporary Internet files. If you start with that empty, you can
hold things before actual install starts, and copy it out to a place of
safety

I would get yourself a free CD of SP2 - order at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx
in case you *have* to reinstall - run it first thing after the install
ends

Thanks for your help! It never fails to amaze me that everytime I come up
with a question, it always gets answered in this forum so quickly.

Thank you so much!

thanks Alex,

I'll give that a try. I don't reinstall as a matter of routine maintenance.
I only reinstall after some change in my computer's operation is
unsatisfactory, usually after downloading a new program.

Thanks!

That's what system restore is good for.
