If I decide to upgrade to Vista from XP is there an automatic back up of XP
that I can use to reinstall if I run into problems with Vista?

Restore a computer to a previous Windows installation after you install
Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933168/en-us

Take precautions first:

1. Back up all data to a different hard drive and/or external media.

2. Optional but very useful - image your system with a program like
Acronis True Image. Store the image on a different hard drive, internal
or external.

3. If you have an OEM machine (HP, Sony, eMachine) that only has a
Recovery Disk option to take you back to factory condition, make sure
you have made the Recovery Disks or have them on hand. If you choose to
do Step 2, this isn't as necessary - assuming that your current
installation is healthy.

the best way is to make an IMAGE of your installation using a software like
acronis true image..

that way your system will be totally backed up and you can restore it...

while the others probably said that you can roll back to xp, that does
involve some possible complications

Concur with Tiberius that your best chance at ensuring you can move back to
XP, if so desired, is to use imaging software to do so. I've no experience
with Acronis but have seen nothing but good/great opinions of it in this ng.
