When I click the back button, most of the time I get the cannot find page
error when I just looked at that page. I am so frustrated, there is nothing
in the knowledge base about it. On other computers, when I view the same
pages, I don't get that error. What is wrong with my setting? Would it be a
good idea to reinstall IE6. I am running XP.

Hi mhef :-)

Try the following and see if it will help:

Cannot Navigate Back to Previous Web Page

Error Message: Warning: Page Has Expired: The Page You Requested..

and.......

When you are using IE to view various Web sites, the Back and Forward
buttons on the toolbar may become unavailable.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q229684 (Jul. 20,
2001) Cannot Navigate Back to Previous Web Page

Here's a bit of information that explains what can happen to cause this.

Back - Return to the page you just left

Grayed out Buttons and Menu Items that Don't Work:

It is a convention in many Windows programs and in the popular browsers to
"gray out" items that currently aren't applicable. So, if you think your
BACK button isn't working, it may be because in that particular instance it
isn't applicable. For example, if you just opened your browser and this was
the first page you viewed, then there isn't a page to go back to, so the
BACK button is grayed out.

Is it only a few sites, or all of them? Is the site or page opening in a
new window? Opening in a new widow can disable the Back button. In all
dominant browsers, webmasters using the <a target="_blank"> tag to force a
link to open in a new window breaks the Back button. The new window does
not retain the browser history of the previous window, so the "Back" button
is disabled. It does sound as it this might be what is happening on these
sites.

Try using the Refresh button and see if that lets you go back.

Help Getting Back
http://www.soundfeelings.com/free/back.htm

Often you can open a link in a new window. Then instead of using the Back
button to return to the first page just close the second window. Doing
that has the additional advantage
that often you won't even lose your place on the previous page.

Another aspect on the matter:
This option is often set by the web site itself, but you can try creating a
new IE cache if you wish.

I had the same problem (apparently it's comon), but only when trying to get
back to a list filtered list from a main website (i.e., a list of all books
by an author, or a list of house in a particular area from an MLS site). I
would search the library site for all books by one author, get results,
select one for more detail, then try to go back to the results page. Is that
your situation? Or is it all attempts to go back to a page. Jan suggested
many of these links for me too, but none of them quite seemed to fit the
problem. Like you, it does not happen for me on other computers using the
exact same version of IE6. I finally gave up, switched to Foxfire as a
browser, and the problem went away (plus Foxfire seems faster than IE).

Hi mhef :-)

Here is more information regarding the Back button problem:

It's possible that a HOSTS file is interferring:

Scroll down to the section that section here. Caution: Do not delete the
current HOSTS file. See the section on safely renaming the HOSTS file. Be
sure to following all instructions carefully.

Hope this helps :-)

Sigh; I tried the RenHosts.bat, but it did not seem to make any difference.
Still have the problem! But thanks for the effort Jan.

Bob,
This is a longshot (guess) but try deleting the Temporary Internet Files
folder. You will have to login as another user with administrator
privileges. See: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm for more
information.

Or, the workaround would be to open links in a new window via Shift
key+click.

Hi Don,

That was a great guess! I deleted all the termporary internet files and
now everything seems to work just fine! I did not have to login as another
user; I'm the only user on this machine and I guess have admin privileges by
default. Thanks for the help.

That's an inefficient way to do that anyway.
If you know that you eventually want to go back to a page
such as a list of search results press Shift when you click
on the link. That will open the instance of the hit in its own
window. Then you have the option of either leaving that window open
(e.g. by minimizing it, Alt-Space,n) or of closing it (Alt-F4).
Either way would take you back directly to exactly where you first
launched that hit. Even the page position and keyboard focus
of the hit list would be preserved then, which is not the case
when you use Backspace to try to "go Back".

Hi Bob,
It sounds like you cleared the cache from Internet Options> General, rather
than deleting the TIF folder. Anyway, I'm glad that it worked for you.
