'Back' button not working

The 'back' button on my IE6 SP1 browser no longer works.

I apparently got on a web site (I believe it was a
Google "translated" site which 'permanently' disabled the
back button.

I have checked the registry for obviously bad entries and
have checked the MS IE site and Googled for "IE back
button disabled" - no joy!

I can see the previous site name if I hover over the back
button, the button is not greyed out - it 'depresses' when
I click on it but nothing happens. Cannot use ALT-left
arrow, cannot select from the drop-down history list.

I have run out of ideas - any help from you would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,
Google does not alter\disable the Back button!

Strange behavior in the Back Button
Sometimes when you click the Back button to return to the previous page it
appears that nothing happens. What usually occurs is that the HOSTS file has
blocked one or more (<Iframe>) ad pages that are embedded into the web page
you are viewing. To verify this click the small drop-down arrow on the Back
button, do you see just an ad server listed?

Sorry if I gave the impression that I was 'blaming' Google for my problem.
I was trying to convey that I got on some 'foreign' (non-English) site and I
*think* that's when my troubles began.

Checked the HOSTS file - looked OK. When I click the drop-down arrow, I see
the websites that I have been on previously - all look normal.

Other ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

Lucky -

Went to Sandi's site . . . did a registry search for 'BTN_BACK', 'SPECIFY',
'DEFAULT' and 'BUTTON' - no success with either of these . . .

Other ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi Steve,

For the present, this is all that I have found regarding this issue. If I
find anything else, I will surely post back. For the time being I can only
say sorry that it didn't work for you.

cannot select from the drop-down history list.

This is ambiguous. Which list, the one you see by pressing F4
(aka TypedURLs) or the one you see by typing a character
(aka AutoSuggest)?

Press Ctrl-H and Alt-w,O for View, By Order Visited Today.
What do you see in that list and can you use any of its entries?

Some sites can disable the Back button and even suppress
their inclusion in History. When that happens the Back stack
is flushed and the only way to go back is to use the History list.

Another possibility is that your real problem is a corrupted TIF.
Test that case by setting Work Offline and see if the page you
are trying to access is cached. If it is supposed to be (as indicated
by the hand pointer) you should be able to open it without being
connected by getting all of its components from the TIF.
To refresh the page online without using the TIF at all press Ctrl-F5
or clear the TIF.

Some specific URLs as examples might further the discussion.

Good luck
