Natural language translation by computers can only do so much without human
intervention because computers don't "understand". If you're someone who
knows both the source and target languages, software translators can be a
big help by doing most if not all of the "donkey work" involved in
translation. If you haven't a clue about one or the other languages then a
computer generated translation can be highly ludicrous (at best) and
dangerously misleading (at worst).
 
Babelfish works very well. I speak a fair bit of French but when it comes to
vocabulary I run out. I use it to write to our agents in France but always
read it through to make sure it makes sense to me. To get the best out of it
you need to be gramatically correct in your English and don't use hyphens, ie
use "do not" not "Don't" etc and try to keep to simple words that don't have
double meanings. Use simple sentences and simple words and you can't go wrong.
