Have people who have tried both got any opinions?

I have and I strongly prefer Avicodec. It is much faster than Gspot. It is
also more configurable and has some cool features, like inventarizing an
entire folder and then exporting such a list to CSV.

I'll check it out. Thanks.

My understanding is that you need BOTH. [snip]

Not really. It is true that just Gspot is not enough, but Avicodec makes
Gspot rather redundant.
The only Gspot feature that Avicodec misses is the file rendering. But
Avicodec has more features, even for just AVI files.
On top of that, Avicodec can give a lot more info about MPEG, WMV/ASF and
RM than Gspot.
