AVI to GIF converter

hi all..

Anyone know of a free program that will convert a short section of video to
an animated GIF?
All the stuff I found through Google is limited functionality and you have
to pay to get it working properly. I only need it for one or two things so
don't really want to pay $40 unless I really have to.

Ulead Gif animator 2, available on the pricelessware site last time I
checked.

All the animated gifs I'm making seem to be much larger in size than the
original video I'm taking them from. Is there a way of slimming them down?

Given the nature of gif and avi compression this is quite inevitable

These are the options that come to mind at first:
1: reduce the number of frames
2: reduce the size
3: reduce the color count

# 3 is not possible with UGA 2. You could extract the frames, reduce the
color count with Irfanview and import the frames back into UGA.
Or reduce the color count with another gif animator. Perhaps Movies
11/12/13 can do that. It is freeware too, but I have never used it.
