Avi format?

Can files in avi format be written to CD and played from CD, or do they
need to be written to a DVD?

Hello,

Yes, they can be written to CD/DVD and played from CD/DVD.

As long as you can play them using your computer, they would be able to play
from CD/DVD.

Note that the video files will not work in most DVD/VCD deck players unless
the player supports such a format. And if you play them in other computer,
they must have the required codecs in order to play the video.

AVI files can be written to any media device (CD, DVD, hard drive,
flash, floppy) as long as the file(s) fit onto it. However, you can
only "really" play these file(s) on XP.

Huh? You can play them on virtually any Windows machine. It doesn't have
to be a Windows XP machine. I'm not sure about a Mac or Linux machines
though.

Is there a way to extract the sound tracts so that these can be played
on any CD player?

Oh course. There are lots of sound records out there. Some free and some
commercial. And maybe Windows Media Player might even convert AVI to CD
Audio format.
