My brother called me just now and asked me what I thought about this error
he's been getting lately. It won't let him run his AVG virus software and if
he tries another virus scanner, it shuts it down too. Here is what he said:

"Every time I log on I get this error message immediately and it shuts down
my Avg anti-virus. When I try to manually run AVG it shuts it down too. I
just got the latest update yesterday and it didn't help the problem at all.

The message reads:

Avgcc32.exe-Application error

The instruction at "0x5f4012a1" referenced memory at "0x00000004". The
memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program.

Anyone know why this happens and how to fix it????

Two possibilities I have heard of.

1.) I have seen this error several times on machines infected with the
Sasser
worm. Check for this infection.. sarc.com has a great removal tool
for it.

2.) You have probably used the policy editor to restrict write access
to the registry key

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

AVG uses this hey to launch AVGCC32.exe. Either allow full access to
this key, or let AVG_CC write to it before disabling access.
