AVG 6.0 Freeze-up

When I run AVG 6.0 it finds 85+ viruses, mostly in
system32 (no surprise). When it tries to heal them, it
ALWAYS freezes up and the only remedy is to pull the
plug... also, some viruses in Start Menu "cannot be
healed or removed". Does this mean that I need to re-
install Windows XP? If so, ideas so not loose info?
(Never had to reinstall in six years...)
Also; thanks for previous help, guys.

The first part is normal, the second list of viruses is, to say the least,
extraordinary. Start/run regedit, search on each of them in turn (edit
find). They will likely turn up in run keys, delete each string from the
right hand pane that loads a virus. Close when finished and reboot.

This looks like a polymorphic virus that has run wild and installed
itself over and over under different names. So having done that
clearout of Run, I would boot to SAfe Mode and from that move them all
out to some temporary location, hen make sure things are running in
normal mode before deleting them
