I'm having problems with increasing frequency that seem to be related to the
ave.exe file.
Can anybody tell me how to fix this and/or related files?

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to do
all scans in Safe Mode. Please see the special Notes regarding using
Multi_AV in Vista.

Do not skip the preparatory steps at the first link and start with Multi-AV.

When all else fails, get guided help. Choose one of the specialty forums
listed at the first link. Register and read its posting FAQ. PLEASE DO NOT
POST LOGS IN THE MS NEWSGROUPS.

If you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be
aware that not all local shops are skilled at removing malware and even if
they are, your computer may be so infested that Windows will need to be
clean-installed. If possible, have all your data backed up before you take
the machine into a shop.

You most certainly do not!

avp.exe belongs to your Kaspersky Internet Security suite - and although I do not
personally have installed - I suspect that avp.exe is the resident shield part of the
program.

That is; the part of the Kaspersky program that scans for threats in "Real-time".

Some AV suites use more system resources than do others, I recommend looking around
for some new AV software for when your licence runs out on Kaspersky...

I've had a couple of brush with AVE.EXE.
Getting rid of the EXE is one thing, but I could not run any file with an .EXE extension, even Regedit.

I found what to change at the following link, on Microsoft's web site, but still not able to run regedit, even in safe mode:

After many trials and errors, I decided to go in "safe mode, command prompt" mode. In the DOS mode, I typed "regedit.exe" in the Windows folder, and to my surprise, Regedit worked.

Do a seach for all instances of AVE.EXE. Mine was in 2 entries. After this, just reboot and you are up and running...

You need to replace what is in the data info with "%1" %* (quotes included)

This is on a Vista computer, but I presume it would work on other Windows based OS.

Thanks for the guide currently doing a full reg search for ave.exe - im not fully up on regedit can you confirm where and what "%1" %* this is for ? (im on xp) can i not simply delete the entries ?
