I have been using AVG but recently learned of Avast.
What are the differences and which one should I be using?

Thanks

The truth is one, you must accept it. Reality is not a point of view, since
if everything was a point a view, then the theory that everything is a point
of view, is just a point a view and not something real.

If you give them both a 3 week test run you will be able to make that
decision very easily. Seeing that you have already used AVG fro some
time, give Avast a test run and then decide. There are a million
personal preferences, letting someone decide for you is not to good.
Good Luck

Good advice - give Antivir Personal a try too

stupid advice AVAST is far better than any of those.
No reason to lose time.

Nice said, then I will not try slooooooooow avast again, because there's
no reason to lose time.

After trying different ones as they popped up, I finally settled for
Avast. I like the eye candy, bells & whistles it has and it has run
flawlessly since installation.

I moved from NAV to AVAST! a few months ago and see nothing slow about it.
I recommend it - so far it has not let any bug into my system.

Show a little initiative, please, by reviewing extant threads such as
"Avast vs AVG" from June and "Anti-Vir Nagware?" (sic) from July and
.....

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alt.comp.freeware/search?q=avg+avast+2005

I much prefer avast! with avast! External Control (AEC) to AVG. With
either I recommend BitDefender (no on-access monitor in free version)
as a secondary scanner. The comparison test results cited below
indicate that the MicroWorld AntiVirus Toolkit Utility (MWAV) might be
an even better choice than BitDefender as a secondary scanner.

http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Main/view/Download-Free-Products.html
http://mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp

My impression is that AVG runs a little faster and is a little less
resource intensive than avast!. AVG is also _much_ less flexible than
avast! + AEC and also less effective. I won't repeat my comments from
the above threads but note citations to test results from
av-comparatives and Tech Support Alert.

Just today I just happened across another quite interesting antivirus
comparison test from April using a test suite of 91202 viruses.

it takes 33 % more time to do a complete scan in avast than AVG, Antivir
or Bitdefender

So as said before, no need to waste time using avast

IMHO avast! is better at doing the job, but AVG runs better on a slow
computer.
