Installing Avast 4 casused BSOD. Then I had to boot up with last known good
command - this caused my CD writing software to fail (which was working fine
before). Using SP1 and some hotfixes.

Avast was probably looking for SP2. Why haven't you secured your
computer with SP2 yet?

I have Avast on one machine and have installed it on many with no
problems so I doubt that Avast is the problem and uninstalling it will
only give you a false sense of having solved the problem.

System Restore didn't help - I'm in the process of checking for other
problems (Avast problably just showed up an unrelated problem).

SP2 is not compatible. Unless MS dorks out for replacing the software taht
would be damaged with SP2

Not compatible with what? What software would be damaged by SP2?

You have it quite wrong!

It is up to the software manufacturers to make "their" software compatible
with the operating system.

Just like it's the auto makers job to make sure their cars run on a
standard highway.
