Thanks, Steve.

This news is interesting:

"A new resident protection module was added to avast! 4.5: the Network
Shield. It is meant as a protection against known Internet worms/attacks. It
analyses all network traffic and scans it for malicious contents. It can be
also taken as a lightweight firewall (or more precisely, an IDS (Intrusion
Detection System)).
The Network Shield is only available on NT-based systems (Windows
NT/2000/XP/2003)."

I also add that existing users can update simply right-clicking the Avast!
tray icon and choosing Updating - Program Update.

Actually I find a lot of new features very interesting

Support for more packers, support for more IM/P2P programs etc, very
good.

But I love the new transparent email scanner , though it works only for
Win2k/XP users.

"Transparent email (SMTP/POP3/IMAP4) scanner

The Internet Mail provider has been enhanced so that it is now able to
filter email traffic automatically, without the need of reconfiguration
of the mail client programs. This is realized by employing a low-level
network filtering driver that is able to intercept all communication
streams and divert them to the avast! mail scanner."

Very nice espically if you are not downloading email directly from your
email client but via a proxy (for spam filtering purposes). It's doable
to get email via a chain of say POPFILE and then AVAST's mail scanner,
but a bit complicated.

You could always do this (and W98 users still can using a localhost and some
settings)
This means you can use T'bird and Avast on 95/98/ME.

Sure. I hope I didnt imply otherwise. But this whole localhost setting
gets complicated if you need to impose another proxy in between. Win2k
and XP users don't need to do any configuration at all.

As a side note, I tested, Thunderbird for about a month, and I found the
bayesian filter in Thunderbird a bit undeveloped. So if I were using
Thunderbird I would need to download email via POPfile (my favoured
antispam solution) and then through AVAST's mailwizard. AVAST 4.5 makes
it a lot easier
